A Symbol of God’s Sacred Union in Marriage

“Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” | Ecclesiastes 4:12

We welcome you to an exciting ministry here at Skyline, and we invite you to share our vision for covenantal marriage and to make your marriage even stronger.

There are proven ways to give you “marriage insurance” by proper preparation before the wedding, learning skills that can strengthen existing marriages, and reconstructing even severely troubled ones.

Marriages in the United States continue to be under attack. America has the highest divorce rate in the civilized world. In 2014, there were 2,183,000 marriages and 1,156,000 divorces. That’s a 52.9% divorce rate.<Mike McManus: Guard Your Hearts > Many Younger Americans choose to live together before marriage; many of these couples never marry, and 75% of those who do marry will end in divorce.

Divorce and non-marriage not only affect the couple but also is devastating for the children involved. One quarter of all adults, 18-35, have grown up in divorced families. There is hope. It is estimated that 80% of marriages in crisis, or having severe difficulties, can be restored.

Here at Skyline we want to change these statistics by standing together to build more successful marriages. In Marriage Savers, we seek God’s help together, and strive to accomplish this task in six areas.

Are you engaged to be married or just seriously dating and want to evaluate your relationship? The Prepare Enrich program has been used by millions of couples to give them the necessary tools every couple needs to navigate the numerous challenges of their relationship. Some of these tools include celebrating your differences, communication skills, and conflict resolution.

There are two choices to best meet each couple’s needs:

  1. Individual Couple Mentoring. You will be matched with a couple who has been trained in Prepare/Enrich. You will meet with them for seven sessions in a private setting.
  2. Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts. This is a classroom setting that takes place at Skyline with 4 to 8 other couples, lasting between 6 to 8 weeks, depending on couple’s needs.

If this is what you are seeking call the Skyline Church Office at 619.660.5000 and ask for extension 5451. The Administrative Assistant will review the options and help you determine which best fits your needs. If you are interested in one-on-one couple mentoring, your confidential information is passed on to Dave and Deanne Hypes. They will contact you and pair you with a trained and experienced couple who will walk you through an informative, nonthreatening 7-12 session program. If a classroom session with group interaction/discussion is more your style, Sharon and Larry Klein teach a 6-8 week class called “Saving Your Marriage Before it Starts.”

Please note: If you are planning to be married by a Skyline pastor and or at Skyline Church, you must attend one of the above options in addition to meeting with a pastor. Be sure to call the Administrative Assistant well in advance of the desired date so you have time to complete one of the above and secure your very special date.

The stepfamily ministry-headed by professional therapist Donna Dennis McBeth and her husband, Allen, seeks to assist those couples who will be forming a stepfamily in their coming marriage; or who are already in a stepfamily marriage relationship.

Skyline recognizes that stepfamily marriages fail at about the 70% rate, but that appropriate intervention with such couples can save 80% of them.

Divorce Care is a 14 week video-based curriculum support group facilitated by Sher & Barbara Takahashi. We have both been through the difficulty of divorce and are passionate about helping others navigate these issues and to put their lives back together again.

Divorce or separation can turn you and your children’s lives upside down, and is a pivotal time in your spiritual journey. The Bible is presented as the “owner manual” for your life throughout the Divorce Care program. We believe the Bible provides direction from God for issues such as separation, divorce, reconciliation and remarriage. These concepts are presented in a sensitive, compassionate manner and will be of interest even to nonbelievers and people not familiar with biblical concepts.

God has the power and plan to put your life back together again. Your Creator understands everything you are going through, He knows exactly how to use this significant and difficult event to bring you closer to Him and restore your loss.

It doesn’t matter what stage of this process you are in, you will benefit greatly from being part of this group. By joining us your recovery process can be shortened and keep you from making the same mistakes you may want to avoid in the future.

Also addressed are the challenges of Facing My Anger, Facing my Depression, Facing My Loneliness, New Relationships , reentering the dating world, Financial Survival, Kid Care, Single Sexuality, Forgiveness, Reconciliation and Moving On Growing Closer to God.

Class currently meets Thursday, 6:30 pm in Room 409.

Other Classes being offered are classes for Single and Parenting and Divorce Care For Kids.

Since the inception of this marriage ministry we have recognized the power and essential nature of prayer both for those lay people who are involved in ministering through this ministry and for those couples who are being ministered to.

While many Skyliners write regular prayer requests via the worship services Communication Card, including for marriage relationships, the Marriage Ministry Prayer Team focuses on praying for those in this ministry and those receiving help specifically. This prayer team is headed by Fred & Pam Luschei.
